The "I Am" Project was piloted at Bala Cynwyd Middle School in 2012 and continues to grow there. Bala Cynwyd Middle School maintains a strong tradition of academic and co-curricular excellence and a nurturing, supportive learning environment for grades 6-8. With the guidance of a highly talented and dedicated staff and the structure of a rigorous, multi-disciplinary curriculum, students enjoy an individualized experience that prepares them to advance through their schooling as independent thinkers and compassionate, responsible global citizens.
The "I Am" Project began as the "I Am" Curriculum nurtured in the eVOLVE program - a a progressive, cross-curricular program for sixth-graders led by teachers Mary Beth Hegeman and Jamie Gaffga. eVOLVE’s mission is to empower students to solve academic, societal, and personal problems through the acquisition and application of skills, real-life experiences, guided investigations, and regular reflection.
The "I Am" Project lessons are designed to fit into a typical classroom period so that they can be taught during school. Each lesson focuses on a particular theme and students explore it through individual reflection, group discussion, meditation, movement, and creative class activities.
