The mission of Alexander K. McClure Elementary School is to create an educational and nurturing environment that fosters academic and social achievement, collaborative learners, and future leaders. We embrace diversities and unique learning styles and enable children to become lifelong learners and productive members of society through the use of critical thinking, problem solving, and real life application.
The "I Am" Project began at McClure as a series of workshops presented on their Martin Luther King day of service. We worked with students and their families (from baby to grandparent!) and opened a discussion about the role stress plays in their lives and how they can incorporate healthy practices to cope and express themselves. We then came back and worked with students through the in-class workshops. The "I Am" Project launches with McClure in September, 2014 as a collaboration with the health and physical education teachers to create a complementary curriculum to those classes.
The "I Am" Project lessons are designed to fit into a typical classroom period so that they can be taught during school. Each lesson focuses on a particular theme and students explore it through individual reflection, group discussion, meditation, movement, and creative class activities.
